At an altitude of close to 1000 m, a pristine crystal-clear mountain lake lies embedded in a pine-tree forest under the mighty cliffs of the Zugspitze mountain.
A true jewel, beautiful to behold both from above and from close-up.
The lake is 3,15 km long, 0,56 km wide, up to 35 m deep (depending on the water-level) and has 7 islands long its northern shores. The Eibsee lake was formed by a giant rockslide. It is rightfully known as one of the most beautiful and cleanest lakes in Upper Bavaria.
Walk around the lake on the gentle path (7.2 km or 4.5 miles – approx. 2 hours) and enjoy the awesome views of the lake and and the mighty flanks of the Waxenstein ridge all the way to the summit of Zugspitze. You are permitted to swim practically anywhere in the lake, with picturesque coves and romantic secluded spots between pine trees to choose from. The area also offers diverse trails for hiking and mountain-biking. Or you can rent a peddle boat or row boat out or go on a small boat cruise. There is a parking lot (small fee) right by the lake. This is also where you will find the Eibsee Hotel, which is situated on the lakeshore, and the bottom station of the cable car that goes to the top of Zugspitze.
