Hoellentalklamm, an exciting gorge

Make sure not to miss a hike through this wild gorge, the name of which translates literally into "Hell's Valley Gorge"! Don't worry, though, the trail is well-secured so that children and adults alike can have fun while enjoying the awesome beauty and force of nature here.

The Hoellentalklamm gorge is easily accessible from the hikers' parking lot in Hammersbach. The trail itself is approx. 1 km (0.6 miles) long with the option of continuing on to Hoellentalangerhütte, a small mountain lodge uphill from the gorge
in a mountain meadow. You can stop for a snack or meal here before descending or climbing further vis "Hupfleitenjoch" onwards towards the Kreuzeck lift station or you can spend the night at Hoellentalangerhütte on the way to the top of the Zugspitze (2962m, very alpine tour, only with according equipment and mountain experience). The gorge is cut deep into the cliffs with the Hammersbach mountain stream tumbling down over jagged rocks, gushing through the narrow opening between the towering cliffs. Follow the gently climbing path that alternately winds through illuminated tunnels with openings through which you can hear and see and feel the wild, roaring river, leads right along the foaming water and crosses the river on bridges. Breathe in the refreshing moist air – perfect on a hot summer day or any other day!

Starting point:
Obergrainau Dorfplatz (small plaza near the Zugspitz train station) or Hammersbach.
Follow the signs to Höllentaleingangshütte (1047m) for approx. 1- 1 1/2 hours. This is a hut at the entrance where you can stop for a meal or snack and where you pay the entrance fee of currently € 3/adult, € 1/child. Continue through the illuminated tunnel and follow the spectacular trail along the wild river for approx. 45 minutes until you reach the end of the gorge at 1193m. Here, you can either descend through the gorge or take the Stangensteig (H3) path for experienced hikers back down. Or you can continue uphill to the mountain lodge, Höllentalangerhütte, and stop for a snack or meal and enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. You can also take a panoramic trail with picturesque views to or from the Hoellentalklamm gorge that passes by Neuneralm, a small lodge in a beautiful meadow.

Tip: Take along raingear to protect from the cold river water!
Hiking boots recommended. If you have small children, hold their hand or use a small rope and harness.

You can also hike up the Partnachklamm, another wild gorge in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Check whether the gorges are open, as weather conditions may cause them to be closed.
