In the southern slope of the Zugspitze summit in busted, 2,650 feet above the sea, is Germany's highest research establishment, the "Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus", named after the nearby glacier. Anchored nine storeys high, with two floors laid in the rock, it is sounding station, observatory and communication device at the same time. In addition, it is also the world's only training centre for atmospheric scientists from developing countries.
