Churches and museums

Art and culture

Our museums give you an insight into the history, tradition and modernity of the region. Art lovers can also gain an insight into the work of local artists and view their works in numerous exhibitions.

In our churches and chapels, on the other hand, you will find places of peace and contemplation. In addition to their sometimes eventful history, they offer you impressive architecture and the opportunity to pause for a moment.

Retreats

Grainau was originally under the jurisdiction of the mother church in Garmisch. Church services such as baptisms, weddings and funerals were held in Garmisch, and the people of Grainau also had to go to church in Garmisch. Nevertheless, the villages had their own chapels. The Obergrainau chapel on the Kirchbichl was built in 1697, the Untergrainau chapel around 1730 and the Hammersbacher Marienkapelle in 1783 using stones from the "Hammersbacher Burg".

In 1812, the first local priest moved into Grainau, in 1835 the mountain cemetery was laid out and in 1927 the Obergrainau church was given its current appearance. The final ecclesiastical separation from Garmisch took place in 1945 with the establishment of the parish of Grainau.

The villages suffered little from the effects of war during the Freising period. Obergrainau, however, was not spared from fire and water. On March 12, 1779, a major fire destroyed 14 houses and the church. The narrow construction, the wooden buildings and a severe drought were the reason why almost all the properties around the upper village square fell victim to the fire. Only a few years later, on June 21, 1788, the Alplebach mired the village square and made two houses uninhabitable.
