Carnival

Carnival in Grainau

the fifth season

For centuries, the "Fosenacht" Nowhere else in the whole of Bavaria is it as lively and original as in Werdenfelser Land.

Each of the "Maschkera" carries a wood-carved larva, which often comes from the family estate, but many newly carved works can also be admired.

The Schellenrührer, the Muiradl, the Untersberger Mandl or the bear with his driver. The Maschkeramusi and a variety of creative Maschkera can be found on the traditional Maschkera days, Carnival Thursday and Shrove Tuesday in Grainau.

The origin of the "Maschkeragehen" is an old pagan custom

They wanted to ward off the evil spirits and winter with a lot of noise and carved Masks, the larvae from the villages. This tradition has been maintained in Werdenfelser Land to this day. The Fosenacht begins on first Sunday after Epiphany and lasts until Shrove Tuesday at 24:00 hours.

In Grainau, the main days of the Maschkeragehen are of course Carnival Thursday, Carnival Sunday and Carnival Tuesday.

At the "Maschkeragehen" the main aim is not to be recognized. Dressed in old traditional costume or work clothes, nothing should resemble the usual figure, even the gait and above all the voice are disguised and the hands are hidden under gloves. A real Maschkera does not speak, but "grumbles". An important rule of the Maschkera is that a Maschkera may pass judgment on other people without getting violent. Every Masquerade always ends punctually at midnight; anyone who misses this time must take off their larva and is therefore recognized by everyone. A good Maschkera therefore always keeps an eye on the time.
