You are here: Home " Poacher's Trail " Wildererweg Lied
Listening where shots were once fired.
You sit quietly on one of the three small wooden benches on the Höhenrainweg trail, gaze at the majestic Zugspitze massif—and suddenly hear gunshots, voices, stories of freedom, hardship, revenge, and death.
Welcome to the Wuidarabank – a special audio trail above Grainau. At three stations, we tell the dramatic story of poaching in the Werdenfelser Land region – thoroughly researched, set to music, and historically accurate.
The texts were written by Grainau author Josef Bader, who spent countless hours poring over old files and archives. His stories provide insight into an almost forgotten chapter of local history—with heart, intellect, and a keen sense for the people behind it all.
Simply scan the QR code on the bench with your smartphone to start the audio experience. The three mp4 files can be streamed or downloaded directly—for listening on the bench or later.
1. Poaching in the Werdenfelser Land region
An exciting overview of centuries of poaching history – from the legendary Jennerwein to cowardly, profit-hungry “Glöckerlwilderer.” Who were these men (and sometimes women)? And why was more than just hunting going on in the forest?
2. Mass poaching after World War I
Anarchy in the mountains: When soldiers returned home with their rifles, hunters fled from the forests, and hotels employed full-time poachers. Meat was both currency and risk.
3. The Grainau Poaching Drama
A tragic shootout below the Ziegspitze rock shook Grainau in 1931. Martin Pischl, a family man, was fatally wounded. What really happened is recounted in a moving song and a factual report—a village remembers.
