Water, reflections, foggy moods - addiction to lakes

A trip to the lake is always an experience - at any time of year. Here are a few lakes that are no more than 30 minutes by car from Grainau.

The emerald green mountain lake
Picturesquely nestled at the foot of the Zugspitze massif with unforgettable views of the Waxenstein and Zugspitze, you will find an island of relaxation and recreation here. The Badersee is a small mountain lake in the municipality of Grainau. The lake got its name from its former owners, the Bader family. The emerald green lake is beautifully situated. It is 18 m deep and underground springs prevent the lake from freezing even in winter. Lake Bader has no inflow or outflow above ground. In the lake, to the west of the island, there is a life-size sculpture of a mermaid on a boulder at a depth of around 5 meters. The art object was placed there in the middle of the 19th century and can be easily seen from the boat. The sculpture played a major role in making the lake famous. Tip: Enjoy the Badersee on a short tour. Perhaps you will discover the mermaid at the bottom of the lake in the crystal-clear water. Afterwards, it's worth stopping off at the Hotel am Badersee.

At the historic bobsleigh run

Lake Riessersee was artificially created in a forest clearing in the Middle Ages and lies at an altitude of around 785 meters. The water supply is mainly provided by a hillside spring on the south-eastern shore.

The lake is also the namesake of the traditional winter sports club and ice hockey club SC Riessersee, which used to play its matches on the frozen lake.

A circular path leads directly around the lake in about 30 minutes.

Many ice sports competitions used to be held on the lake, such as speed skating and ice hockey at the 1936 Olympic Games. The lake first became famous for the legendary 1936 Olympic bobsleigh run, which was built in 1909 and is now a listed building. From 1910, numerous races were held here on one of the most dangerous tracks in the world. The finish curve of the historic natural bobsleigh run is located in the south-west of the lake. Just a few hundred meters from the lake is the "Bobshed" with numerous historical exhibits and original film material.
