A trip to the lake is always an experience - at any time of year. Here are a few lakes that are no more than 30 minutes by car from Grainau.
At the historic bobsleigh run
Lake Riessersee was artificially created in a forest clearing in the Middle Ages and lies at an altitude of around 785 meters. The water supply is mainly provided by a hillside spring on the south-eastern shore.
The lake is also the namesake of the traditional winter sports club and ice hockey club SC Riessersee, which used to play its matches on the frozen lake.
A circular path leads directly around the lake in about 30 minutes.
Many ice sports competitions used to be held on the lake, such as speed skating and ice hockey at the 1936 Olympic Games. The lake first became famous for the legendary 1936 Olympic bobsleigh run, which was built in 1909 and is now a listed building. From 1910, numerous races were held here on one of the most dangerous tracks in the world. The finish curve of the historic natural bobsleigh run is located in the south-west of the lake. Just a few hundred meters from the lake is the "Bobshed" with numerous historical exhibits and original film material.
