Via the Esterbergalm to the Finzbachtal and lake Barmsee

Starting point: Bahnhof (train station) Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Ending point:

  • Route length:37,2 km
  • Highest point: m
  • Altitude uphill:1074 m
  • Duration:3.25 Std
The first, and steepest, leg to the Esterbergalm is duly rewarded. The mountain pasture with the Alpine hut is located at a beautiful spot between the mountains Wank, Fricken and Krottenkopf. In the summer months, the young cattle of the Partenkirchen farmers enjoy the tasty grass of the wide pastures. If you want to hike, e.g. with children, on a less exhausting trail, you can take the Wankbahn cable car to the middle terminal, and reach Esterbergalm via the Hüttlsteig trail in roughly one and a half hours. By the way: Directly opposite the Alpine hut there is a small chapel that adorns this idyllic spot. From here, after cycling up and down for a while, go downhill to the Finzbach stream to Krön. The picturesque lakes Barmsee and Grubsee invite you for a swim or at least a nice break.

Directly at the station you will start along Bahnhofstraße and cross the town hall intersection to the Partenkirchen part of town. Having passed the small church Sebastianskircherl you will turn left onto Münchnerstraße and follow its course until you arrive at the turnoff in the direction of the Wankbahn cable car. You will then follow Wankbahnstraße, pass the parking site on the right and pedal on over the cattle grid. After ca. 800 m turn left in the direction of "Esterbergalm", where you will arrive 6 km later (1,264). Should you be thirsty, you can take a break here. On you go then on the main path towards Krün. You will pass the Alpine hut Hintere Esterbergalm, also called Farchanter Alm, on your right hand side and cycle downhill through the Finzbachtal valley to Krün. On reaching the valley, you will go to the right to Lake Barmsee, which you will reach after crossing a forest. Along the western bank and then to the right you will reach the swimming area at lake Grubsee. Here you should keep right again and follow the street to Klais. Parallel to the state road B2, the cycle track winds its way via Gerold to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you want, you can turn right to "Schlattan/Höfle", cycle an easy climb and get back via the "Alte Gsteig". This route is a lot quieter than the cycle track right next to the state road B2.
