Traditional costumes and customs

"Dirndl" and "Lederhos'n"

In the Zugspitz village of Grainau, tradition is still alive.

Bavarian costume, known throughout the world, has its origin in this region. The men wear leather trousers and hand embroidered suspenders. The women wear a Dirndlgwand, normally the Waschdirndl or the Festtagsg'wand on special occasions.

The “greane G'wand” is the men's festive costume, made from green loden. The women will also don the "Alten Tracht" – with three different types of traditional headgear. The bodice is decorated with a richly embroidered "G'schnürkette". The Plattlermadl wear a dark red Dirndlgwand, in addition a light blue "Ausbroadtuch" (shoulder cloth). The Plattlermadl don't wear hats. For men, the hat is decorated with an eagle feather or the “Gamsbart”. At numerous festivals and processions you can witness our girls and boys, the women and men in their traditional costumes.
