Johanni Fires

Fires to celebrate midsummer´s day - on June 23

The summer solstice is celebrated when the sun reaches its highest point in the summer.

On the eve of this day (June 23), which is called "Johannitag" in German after Saint Johannes, whose name day is on this day, bonfires are lit on mountain tops and hills throughout the Werdenfelser region.

The Johanni fires in Grainau on June 23 are especially impressive, because the entire Waxenstein ridge is crowned by a chain of glowing fires after the sky has darkened, all lit up by brave local mountaineers. No matter what the weather conditions are like, they climb up the mountain on narrow paths, occasionally even have to scale cliffs, until they reach the lofty ridge.
